Our Ministries

Benevolence Ministry

Our Church is committed to helping its church members and the surrounding community who may have special circumstances that prevent them from meeting their basic needs.

The benevolence ministry provides exclusive assistance to the poor and those in need of food, clothing, shelter, and emergency financial assistance within our church community.  In addition to emergency financial assistance, the benevolence committee maintains a food bank for the express purpose of meeting the needs of the poor.

Bible School / Christian Education

The purpose of the Bible School is to engage individuals in the study of God’s Word; to equip them as they grow and mature spiritually and enable them to effectively lead others to Christ.

Grounds & Housekeeping

This Ministry performs God’s work at the church through the upkeep and improvement of Church facilities.  The ministry ensures that the church buildings and grounds are maintained and repaired as necessary, and develops and implements policies and proposals for use of the buildings and grounds.  The ministry is responsible for the overall maintenance and physical upkeep of the Grounds and building.

Hospitality Ministry

To provide refreshments for programs.  Plan and coordinate meals for potluck and special church functions that require a meal to be served.

Missions Ministry

A ministry designed to assist in sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ through the financial and /or service support of missionaries, missions’ agencies, and institutions of biblical education.

Music Ministry

Our music worship is connected to the churches past, it reflects the present, and is grounded in God’s Word.

Monroe Street has been blessed with many soloists. We organized our first sanctuary choir under Sister Izetta Wainwright Cropp, with Sister Bertha Coleman serving as pianist. The choir consisting of men and women of all ages, continues to be a ministry by setting the mode for worship.  Under the leadership of the second team, Brother LaVerne and Sister Norma Jean Anderson, the choir continued to sing music and praises to the glory of God. Brother Franklin Johnson is the third and current sanctuary choir director, organist, pianist, and Ministry  of Music. He has been serving over 50 years. Due to the great enthusiasm and emotional fervor of music, the song service varies from classical to contemporary gospel. The sanctuary choir is the main choir of the church.

The Chancel Choir was organized and was composed of 13 specially selected singers from the sanctuary choir.  They performed at special services and events.   The Chancel Choir performances consisted of gospel and secular music.

In 1974, the Youth Choir was started under Brother Franklin Johnson.  Currently, the Youth Choir is under the direction of Sister Sondra Moore and assisted by Brother James T. Moore and Sister Tabitha Gray.

In 1981, five young men (Brother Robert & Brother Roderick Britts, Brother Harold Johnson, Brother James Johnson III & Brother Preston McCrary) expressed a desire to minister through music together, thus, they started the Messengers for Christ. Since their beginning, they have appeared in all of the area’s New Testament churches, many local churches, numerous churches within the surrounding communities, in other states, banquets, before Brother James R. Thompson the Governor of Illinois and George Bush the Vice President of the United States and the North American Christian Convention before tens of thousands.   Currently, the Messengers for Christ consist of Brother Roderick Britts, Brother Harold Johnson, Brother Roger Goza, Sister Linda Goza and Sister Diane Geary.

During the eighties, the North Side Church of Christ in Champaign, the Collette Street Church of Christ in Danville and our Sanctuary Choir formed a mass choir, the Voices of Christ. The Voices of Christ consisted of more than sixty voices. The choir, under the direction of Brother Franklin Johnson and Assistant Director Susie Doswell, sang renditions in gospel, spirituals, hymns, and contemporary gospel. They performed concerts in many churches, the College of the Scriptures in Louisville, Kentucky and the Care and Share Rally in Chicago, Illinois.

In 1998, Brother Johnson expanded the Music Ministry and the Sanctuary Bronze Hand Bell Choir was formed.  We started out playing with two octaves of hand chimes, then expanded to four octaves. In 2000,  we added three octaves of hand bells.  Today, the choir performs with four and one-half octaves of hand bells and five octaves of hand chimes and have thirteen members..  In addition to performing at church services and programs, the Sanctuary Bronze Hand Bell Choir has performed at various local churches and the Festival of Trees. It is the only one on the eastside of Springfield.

Ushers & Greeter’s Ministry

We organized the Usher Board under the direction of Sister Katherine L. White.  The Usher Board is a vital ministry of the church.  As an official representative of the church of Jesus Christ, ushers have a tremendous task in leading people into readiness for learning, worshiping and evangelism. The Usher Board prepares the sanctuary for worship by seeing that the needs of the congregation are met. The Usher Ministry strongly believes that the Lord Jesus Christ has called us to be “doorkeepers in the house of God.  Our Mission is to provide comfort and promote the best worship experience possible to visitors as well as to the saints of God.

Church Greeters are a part of the ministry of ushering. As an official representative of the church, Greeters are usually the first persons seen by visitors, members and friends on entering the Monroe Street Christian Church.  They welcome each person entering the vestibule and sanctuary.

Women’s Ministry

The Women’s Ministry provides an outreach for women to grow and mature in their relationship with Christ and to encourage one another in their spiritual walk through the study of God’s Word, fellowship, service, prayer and worship.
